Tasting Hastings : The Seaside Comes To Shoreditch : YCN

Throughout February, a collection of Hastings-based artists and designers will be offering their wares for sale in the YCN Shop & Library at 72 RivingtonStreet.

YCN curator Lucy Kenyon says: “We visited Hastings last year as a team, and were dazzled by the output of its artists and designers. Hastings is one of the most curious and charming of England’s seaside towns. It’s an honour to host this group, and we hope to please as many people as possible with their products ”.

All products can be seen and bought in the YCN Shop & Library at 72 Rivington Street from 6th to 29th February. Open weekdays from 10am to 6pm, weekends 11am to 4pm.

Veer Creative Catalyst: Design For Change Competition Results

Veer.com recently launched 'Creative Catalyst' to generate a piece of artwork in support of a great global or local cause.

The winner got a £2000 donation for the organisation they chose, as well as their piece displayed in London and Berlin, a Computer Arts feature and 2000 Veer Credits for their next creative projects.

The competition was won by Barton Damer, with his piece on Malaria in Africa. Watch the video below to see more and hear more about the competition.

Don't miss a great opportunity - the strapline of Chevrolet's latest commercial for TV and online.

The advert's narrative begins with a man being shown around a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" style aircraft hanger filled with wooden boxes, by another man in a white coat. The mysterious official reveals the warehouse is filled with boxes containing every opportunity someone has missed, carefully stored away in a kind of never ending stasis.

A plethora of gold, silver and bronze trophies, that yacht you've always wanted but never bought, learning the piano, walking on the Moon?! (Must have been an opportunity missed by someone!) and many more.

MAKE IT HAPPEN WITH CHEVROLET

Chevrolet encourage you not to miss an opportunity and introduce their range of cars at the end of the commercial, revealing the sentiment of the advert in a kind of edgy tone.

To continue this intriguing storyline, Chevrolet developed a series of additional videos that deliver background stories to some of the missed opportunities featured in the Warehouse video. New Müller ad 2011 - wünderful stuff

I love the new Müller advert, a wonderful blend of modern nostalgia whipped up using hand drawn animation, computer generated wizardry and real life action!

The advert was created by TBWA\London and shows the Müller robot, developed especially for this advert, wreaking havoc and turning ordinary law abiding citizens into a collection of nostalgic pop culture characters, including none other than Yogi Bear, a selection of Mr Men, Muttley, KITT (The Hoff's ride) and many more!

The campaign launched with the first round of this year’s The X Factor live finals. The epic, 90-second commercial aired simultaneously across 50 channels, including the coveted slot during Britain’s biggest entertainment show.

Weird and Wonderful Alternative Homes in London

Looking to move to London and want something a little different? Why settle for the norm when living in the country's capital? There are many flats to rent in London, but not so many quite like these four.

Perhaps you'd be interested in living in this 134 feet long riveted steel lightship? Which can be found in London Docks. From the outside you wouldn't expect this old ship was a converted home inside. The interior is stripped back and rough, almost having the look of a filmset.

Then of course there's London's famous Container City, a collection of buildings created from re-used shipping containers. If you've looking for property for sale in London then maybe a container is the right option for you! They can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes built to fit you.

How about The Thin House located in Thurloe Square, Knightsbridge?!

Or perhaps London's smallest house, located in 10 Hyde Park Place, Marble Arch. Squeezed between two others, this property was thought to have been built to block a right of way to St George's graveyard to deter grave robbers.

So go ahead and look up some estate agents London and start thinking outside the box! Ok so maybe you won't move into a converted ship, but there's got to be more out there than the standard 4 walls.

Avios, the new name for airmiles, only launched a few days ago and have just released a captivating TV advert to spread the word of Avios.

The Anything Can Fly Advert shows household electrical items, a petrol pump and others flying under their own steam. Hinting towards how you can earn points in the new Avios scheme. Visit avios.com to find out more.

And to see how they went about creating these amazing flying machines, view the video below! I love the flying lawnmower at the end, it has an eerie movement, especially with the music they have put to the film. A great first ad for Avios!

I'm a big fan of Honda's advertising campaigns, and here it looks like Wieden + Kennedy London, have created another winner for them, with the direction of Dawid Marcinkowski.

When you don't know how - follow happy

That's the lesson the Honda engineers learnt when developing the interior for the new Honda Civic. The campaign follows the story that when confronted by potential customer and his dog, Honda saw that the customer's dog enjoyed sitting in the space between the 'Magic Seats'. They took inspiration from this and the Honda Engineers realised they needed Happiness to be their guide. For them it was the image of a Happy Dog in the back seat of the car which made them keep the Magic Seats.

If we never venture into the unknown how do we get anywhere new?After all, treading along a common path will never lead to something new or innovative.

As well as this great short video, Honda have created an interactive game where you can learn about how they came to make certain decisions when designing for the new Honda Civic.

Alice in Wonderland at the Tate Liverpool and Tate Online shop

The Tate Liverpool is currently showing an exhibition about Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, showing until 29 January 2012.

To coincide with the exhibition, Tate have created a unique range of books and products inspired by the original story by Carroll and the new exhibition at Tate Liverpool, view the full range here.

The exhibition will include Carroll's original manuscript, written in 1864 as a present for ten year old Alice Liddell. Also a rare chance to view Carroll's own drawings and photographs, alongside Victorian Alice memorabilia and John Tenniel’s preliminary drawings for the first edition of the novel.

The new range includes a ‘Mad Hatter’s’ Tea Set designed by Ali Miller, quote inspired letterpress items by a Two Pipe Problem and jewellery featuring Alice illustrations by Maria Allen.

The BBC's Britain in a day

The BBC have recently started showing adverts to ask the viewing public to get involved in a new programme, set to air sometime in May 2012.

Britain in a day will be compiled from footage taken on the 12th November (this Saturday!) by the public. Everyone is free to upload their own personal video footage for consideration to be included in the actual BBC programme.

I am planning on taking some film on Saturday and encourage you to do so too! You don't have to film all day, just so long as it's filmed on the 12th November and you're not doing anything naughty! See the BBC website for more details about the project.

London 10 x 10 by Article 25

WHAT IS IT?
10x10 is an event run by Article 25, to raise money and awareness for their overseas projects (Including a Media Centre in Port Harcourt in Nigeria and School Improvements in Burkina Faso).

10x10 splits the City of London into 100 squares, each of which is allocated to a renowned architect or artist who will create a drawn representation of something in that square.

Contributing architects include Lord Foster, Sir Terry Farrell, Bernard Tshumi, Will Allsop, Sunand Prasad, Peter Murray and Grand Design’s Kevin McCloud. These 100 drawings will then be put together to form a re-interpretation of the City and will be auctioned by Sotheby’s on the 1st December. All of the proceeds raised will go to Article 25’s projects overseas.

Below are a few of the current contributors and their architectural observations within their own allocated area of London.

These Mysterious 'Big Hands' Are Popping Up All Over The Place

Pairs of big white hands have been showing up in cities across Europe. The project first appeared on Saturday with a pair of giant white hands in London's Covent Garden. They have also appeared in Paris, Milan, Moscow, Berlin, Stockholm, Zurich and Warsaw and have been met with wild speculation as to what on Earth they are actually for?!

These days it doesn't take long for people to assume it's a promotional campaign, but for whom and for what product?

The hands have QR codes on them directing viewers to the website www.thebighands.com

The fact that the hands are in what appears to be a photo taking posture and that you have to take an image with a smart phone suggests that it's likely to be for a phone of some sort. Whoever it's for it's already proved to be a success whipping up a huge response from the public, but how long will we have to wait until they spill the beans?

International PARK(ing) day, London 16th September 2011

Tomorrow is international PARK(ing) day.

"PARK(ing) Day is a one-day, global event, where the public, artists and activists collaborate to transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces - temporary parks for the public good and enhancement of the urban built environment. A quintessentially “open source” project, PARK(ing) Day has been adapted and remixed to address a variety of social issues in diverse urban contexts around the world."

The aim of PARK(ing) Day is to attract attention to the need of more urban open spaces, to generate debate about how public space is handled and improve the quality of the urban human habitat.

The event will conicide with the start of this year's London Fashion Week and London Design Week. Sounds like a great project, and well worth a look if you're in the South Bank area tomorrow.

It was a great collection crammed into the Tom Paine Press, it was rather tight in there but there was so much great work to see it didn't matter at all.

Dainow&Dainow have curated an exhibition of the freshest and most intelligent architectural art London has to offer entitled 'Imagined Cities'. The exhibition contains the best work from London's recent graduates, alongside works from more established talents.

‘Imagined Cities’ features the work of acclaimed architecture graduate, Catrina Stewart, whose eccentric project ‘The London Farmhouse’ considers how increasing urban populations and waste can be used to positive effect. By integrating agriculture into inner city housing, Stewart proposes how urban communities might eliminate waste and become self-sufficient, using faeces, electric eels and fruit, among other resources, to power urban London communities. “Catrina Stewart’s works are some of the most original and strikingly beautiful drawings I have seen”, says Adam Dainow. “I am delighted to showcase her work in this new exhibition.”

The exhibition is to be hosted by the Department of Coffee and Social Affairs and opens on the 16th September 2011.

Twin Peaks Damn Fine Japanese Coffee ads - David Lynch

Georgia coffee is damn fine coffee.

Well it's not as black as a moonless night but it does look great on these Japanese ads for Georgia coffee. Unfortunately these Twin Peaks style ads were cut short and only completed a first series. The adverts were filmed when Twin Peaks was being shot, and features Agent Cooper and a few other characters from the cult classic.

"These commercials were done for the Japanese canned coffee, Georgia. The series was set in Twin Peaks and featured many of the cast from the series. In the ads, a Japanese man searches for his missing wife. Each commercial added more clues to the mystery, until the final one where Cooper rescues her from the Black Lodge. Originally a second series of four were planned, but the Coffee company, unhappy with the first series, canceled them." www.lynchnet.com

Lynch has done a number of ads including a particularly serious one for Clear Blue pregnancy tests! Yes it's true.

Hannah Rollings - My Travel Journal

My travel journal is the perfect kids travel book, packed full of exciting and thought provoking activities.

"Hannah is an illustrator who loves to draw from her holidays. She has created this book for the young explorer"

The journal is divided into chapters which cover topics such as passports, the suitcase, the journey, favourite places, food discoveries and more. Each chapter will challenge any child to think and describe their holiday by drawing faces and animals they see to writing about their experiences of the day.

My travel journal was in a shortlist of 18 for the V&A Book Award 2011, from nearly 1,000 entries.

Honda's new 2011 TV ads sponsoring Channel 4

I'm a big fan of Honda's advertising and TV idents, and have posted about them in the past, so I'm pleased to hear that a whole new series of mini-documentary style idents are about to be launched sponsoring Channel 4 documentaries.

The new set of short films were created by Wieden and Kennedy London, and star real life Honda customers who use Honda products in an unusual way, or to do something a little less common than driving to the office.

Chris Groom and Sam Heath, Creative Directors, Wieden + Kennedy said, “We knew there were all sorts of people using all sorts of Honda products in extraordinary ways. A documentary format provided the perfect platform to celebrate them.”

The first of four short films features an Alpaca breeder called Phillipa who regularly uses a Honda ATV to go about her Alpaca related business. The film shows Phillipa at her country home feeding her Alpacas using her ATV bike to get about. It’s simply filmed and isn’t in your face like some sponsored spots are. Each of the four idents will feature a new Honda customer each with their own individual story to tell of how they use and trust their Honda products. See the video here >

There is also a big online element to these new idents which wasn't such a strong focus in the past. Viewers are able to see extra content on their website www.honda.co.uk/stories to gain access to other films, articles and interesting stories as well as being engaged by a campaign Facebook page and Twitter account.

The INFINITI Digital Art Competition will discover talents from all corners of the globe, from artists and professional designers to VJ's and students, this really is a level playing field set to uncover the best talent out there!

The Hunting of the Snark is a wonderfully illustrated story about the Bellman and his eccentric crew as they follow their quest to catch a most mysterious creature called the Snark.

I've always been a fan of the Moomins, the world that Tove Jansson created is an inspiration to many people. The images accompanying The Hunting of the Snark makes the weird and wonderful story a reality. Each character has been drawn to perfection, the personalities of the crew members becomes immediately obvious at first glance.

In 1959 Tove Jansson (Author & illustrator of the Moomins) originally created these illustrations to accompany 'The Hunting of the Snark' for the Swedish language edition. Then remaining unavailable for over 50 years, Tate Publishing have recreated the book in English with Tove Jansson's inspired images.

This is a great book for a quick read, but you'll come back to read it again and again as you become lost in the world of the Snark.

Stella Artois are continuing their campaign, originally to find a replacement for Jacques D-Azur, now the campaign is to find a likely fellow, man enough to play the role of Jacques D-Azur that will premiere at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

So you think you've got what it takes to play the role of Monsieur D'Azur?

In addition to playing the leading role in the film, the lucky winner will also attend the prestigious Cannes Film Festival where the movie will premiere, and will receive movie star treatment throughout their trip.

On the Stella Artois website you can film your audition tape by following the steps using a webcam. The footage will then be automatically edited together to create the perfect casting film to share with your friends.

UP inspired house : National Geographic

This life sized, UP inspired, 'house-ship' was created by National Geographic.

The aim was to set a new world record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted. The house was 18 foot tall with 300 balloons attached. The UP inspired 'house-ship' reached an altitude of over 10,000 feet, and flew for approximately one hour.

The event was also filmed by National Geographic and will become a part of the new National Geographic Channel series called How Can it Be?

Pretty cool!

Giant Blue Cock (erel) To Take The Fourth Plinth

Here are the next two commissions set to take the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

The first, a bronze boy on a rocking horse by Elmgreen & Dragset called 'Powerless' will be unveiled on the now famous plinth in 2012, and the second is a giant bright blue Cockerel created by Katharina Fritsh entitled Hahn/Cock which is due to be unveiled in 2013.

I love both of these sculptures - especially the Cockerel, it will bring a bit of fun to Trafalgar Square and certainly brighten the place up a bit!

Robert Tavener

I came across Robert Tavener whilst browsing in the De La Warr Pavillion's art shop and was pleasantly surprised! I love the boldness of the work, lino cut printing has a read tactile element to it which really seems to come through in Robert Tavener's work. You can really picture him carving away at the lino creating these amazing images.

It was nice to see that he was local (ish) to my home town, having lived in Eastbourne for over 50 years. To find out more about Robert Tavener please click here to read Tavener's biography.

There is a great quote by Tavener on his biography which reads:

"In the diverse and complex world of artists' prints, I have tried to keep three or perhaps four qualities paramount. These are design, colour, draughtsmanship, together with an awareness of the disciplines of autographic printmaking. A lithograph should not be a reproduction of anything else, but must exemplify the textures and qualities inherent in stone and plate; a block print should demonstrate by its "cutty" qualities the resistance of wood and lino to the gouge, the knife and the graver. It should not imitate drawing or painting, and the printed image is the Original"

I've never seen pop-up books quite like White Noise and Blue2 - two children's books by David Carter.

White Noise is the latest book from David Carter which explores sounds and colours, using intricate shapes and amazingly complex paper mechanics. The book creeks and groans as you turn from page to page, there are even pages with musical parts that drag across patterns of cut paper and scratching across rough opaque paper. Both books are great fun, and will astound anyone who picks them up, I highly recommend having a look at the real thing as the pictures don't do them justice.

Have you seen Google recently? They're up to old tricks, putting up a new UK and US homepage which will cause a storm! A little more simple than the previous 'Pacman' inspired homepages, but it's simple look and flying bubbles that react to the mouse cursor are great fun!

So what's it all about?

Some new way of using HTML5? perhaps? Just a bit of fun? Maybe?! Who knows, if anyone knows let me know and post up a comment.

10 by Marion Bataille : Pop up book

10 is the new pop up book by Marion Bataille recently published by Tate Publishing.

10 explores the nature of counting. Imagine counting to ten with your fingers and then back again, we normally see one number as we count but we're actually forgetting the negative / mirror number on our fingers. So three becomes eight and four becomes seven. Bataille shows this thought process by using the pop up technoque to blend from number to number in a seamless way.

The book comes in a rather nice red box sheath and is a very solid and satisfying thing to hold as you flip through the pages.

Tip-Ex - a Hunter Shoots a Bear

Check out this new campaign from Tip-Ex 'A Hunter Shoots a Bear'. It's a great idea, and pulled off perfectly. A video plays out of a couple of hunters in the forest, when all of a sudden a bear crashes in on their tent! What happens next? You decide! The next bit is where things get interesting, as the main character pulls a giant Tip-Ex roller from the adverts on the right, straight out of the video screen and allows you to re-write the story using Tip-ex. Now you can type in anything you want to happen, and watch the actors perform your request!

Even the error messages are pretty great, with the bear acting at it's best.
